It's true -- a lot of people do these audio sessions, and when we launched Mile Marker on Jan. 14, 2011, we had no intentions of reinventing the wheel. Series like Daytrotter and NPR's World Cafe have been in the game far longer and they work with twice (or four times) the resources. We didn't want to beat them, we merely wanted to introduce our readers to a slew of great new music and join the conversation. We wanted to paint a portrait of what it's really like to be a working artist on tour -- to carry your own gear, to drive eight hours in a 15-passenger van to play a show for 15 people. And to still drag yourself into Uneven Studio because their publicist put it on their itinerary. We never expected to hear the War on Drugs record a charging live version of "Baby Missiles" months before its official release. Nor did we expect Ha Ha Tonka or Apex Manor to take over our engineer Bryan's kitchen. Nor for Colour Revolt to do some last-minute cymbal repair with a rusty electr! ic saw in the backyard. And we never expected world-renowned musicians like Bela Fleck and Vusi Mahlasela to walk through the front door of the studio. So, here's looking back as we move into Year 2.
